Parent-Teacher Conference

Find small, low-pressure ways to connect with your girl.

Go out to lunch.

Watch a movie together (Put your phone away!).

Go hiking.

Cook something together.

Create a photo book together.

Kick around a soccer ball.

Ask your daughter to teach you something (like making a friendship bracelet or creating a photo collage).

Run errands together.

Though many girls begin to move toward peers during middle childhood, they continue to need support and guidance from their parents. A strong parental presence during these years has a protective effect against peer pressure and the stress that often accompanies the changes, listed above and on the previous page, that girls undergo during this time period. While some of you are no doubt shaking your heads because your daughters seem to be all friends all the time, girls tell me that they don’t know how to tell their parents how much they need them. Communicating emotions and interpersonal needs can be difficult during this time.
